A Trophy Indeed

Becky Walchi

Opening morning of buck season 2008, I broke my ankle in my first attempt at killing a buck. I persevered for five more days when I came across this magnificent beast. He was indeed wise and perhaps old, and stealthy to say the least. He made no attempt at flinching a muscle as I drew up my rifle and prepared for a shot. The rifle merely went click when I pulled the trigger. I’d short stroked chambering a round; quickly as I could I chambered another round. I saw and heard the impact of the bullet. A trophy, indeed.
